The Ariane 44LP is a medium-to-heavy expendable launch vehicle developed and operated by Arianespace, the French-led commercial launch consortium. A member of the highly successful Ariane 4 family produced by the European Space Agency and its industrial partners, the 44LP represents one of the most capable configurations within that lineage, distinguishing itself through its mixed strap-on booster arrangement of two liquid-fueled and two solid-fueled auxiliary boosters attached to the core first stage.

Standing 58.4 meters tall with a core diameter of 3.8 meters, the 44LP is a substantial vehicle well suited to the commercial geostationary satellite market that defined the launch industry through the 1990s. It is capable of delivering up to 8,000 kg to low Earth orbit or 4,170 kg to geostationary transfer orbit (GTO), the latter being the mission profile for which it was most frequently employed. Launches are conducted from the Guiana Space Centre in Kourou, French Guiana, a site chosen for its proximity to the equator and its value to European access to space.

Operational History

Notable Missions

Among the most recent missions in our record, the 44LP carried an impressive roster of high-profile commercial payloads. These include DirecTV-4S, supporting direct broadcast television services in North America; Europe*Star 1, a commercial communications satellite; and the dual-manifest mission carrying both Brasilsat B4 and Nilesat 102, demonstrating the vehicle's ability to deliver two payloads to orbit in a single flight. Additional recent missions include Superbird B2 for Japanese operator SCC, GE 4 for GE Capital Satellite Services, and Orion 2 for Loral Space & Communications.

Legacy

The Ariane 44LP played a meaningful role in establishing Europe as a dominant force in the global commercial launch market during the 1990s. Together with the other Ariane 4 variants, it helped Arianespace capture a commanding share of the international satellite launch business before the introduction of the Ariane 5 family.
