The Ariane 42L is a medium-to-heavy expendable orbital launch vehicle operated by Arianespace, the French-founded commercial launch services company. It belongs to the Ariane 4 family, which was developed by the European Space Agency (ESA) and manufactured by Aérospatiale in France. The Ariane 4 series became one of the most commercially successful rocket families of the late twentieth century, and the 42L variant represented one of its more capable configurations, designed specifically to meet growing demand for geostationary communications satellite launches.

Design and Configuration

The "42L" designation reflects the vehicle's booster arrangement within the modular Ariane 4 lineup. The suffix "2L" denotes the use of two liquid-fueled strap-on boosters, which supplemented the core stage to provide additional thrust at liftoff. Standing 55.6 metres tall with a core diameter of 3.8 metres, the Ariane 42L occupies the mid-to-upper tier of the Ariane 4 performance range. Its liquid boosters gave it meaningfully greater capability than variants equipped with solid or no strap-ons, allowing it to deliver up to 7,000 kg to low Earth orbit and approximately 3,590 kg to geostationary transfer orbit (GTO) — the trajectory most relevant to its primary commercial payload customers.
