Background
By the close of the 1980s, the Space Shuttle program had been rebuilt with renewed purpose following the *Challenger* disaster of January 1986. Return-to-flight missions had restored confidence in the orbiter fleet, and the Department of Defense had reasserted its stake in shuttle operations, reserving a series of dedicated classified flights to carry sensitive national-security payloads into orbit. STS-33 was one such mission — a tightly held military sortie that revealed almost nothing of its objectives to the public at the time, yet carried a significance that extended well beyond its classified cargo.
Frederick D. Gregory, a decorated Air Force colonel and veteran astronaut who had previously served as pilot on STS-51B in 1985, was named commander of STS-33. Approximately eight hours and twenty minutes into the mission, the classified payload was deployed from *Discovery*'s payload bay. The sequence involved careful attitude management by the crew to position the orbiter correctly, followed by the controlled release and subsequent propulsive maneuver of the satellite to its intended orbit.
